The Wonder Project - Final Test Flights

 Hi Bloggers,

Today we did our final test flights. When the morning tea bell rang my class quickly fixed our rockets. Then we went to room 8 and we started giving gifts to Colm. Colm had his last lesson with us today so we made him a card. Room 8 made a video for him. The video had kids saying thank you and how awesome it was for him to teach us. Neha from room 8 said a little speech on behalf of the senior school. (Year 4, 5 and 6 people) Once we went through some of the things that we needed to know. 

Room 6 then went to Keith Hay Park followed by room 9 and 8. Team Wonder went first and we had decided to put 200ml of water and 50psi. All of the senior classes were gonna do a competition of which rocket can go the furthest. My group one didn't go that far. It only went 25 metres far. In our class the furthest one was 37.6 metres. I don't really know which one went the furthest.

The Wonder Project - The Finale Modifications and Improvements!

This week we were doing our finale improvements and modifications. For our group we had to make three new fins because our old fins broke off. We also wanted to make them out of plastic. None of us had brought plastic but thankfully another group gave some to us. We had a piece of string that we used for the centre of mass and pressure. Colm said we have to take it out so we did. We also made a new nose cone because our other nose cone wouldn't fit properly. That was all of the improvements that we did.

The Wonder Project - Our Second Test Launch

This week we were launching our rockets again. Our rocket had three fins, a nose cone, some designs and our team name. I will tell you what we had done in our session for this week. 

As soon the morning tea bell went we sat down in room 9. Room 6, 8 and 9 were doing this together. This project is meant to be for the year 4, 5 and 6's. We went to room 9 because the hall had juniors in it. We went inside and we talked about Newtons third law of motion. Which is reaction, we watched a video and then some of us blew balloons. We blew them up to know which ones can go higher or lower. 

After this we went to Keith Hay Park which was a minute walk from our school. Room 8 and 9 started at the same time as us. In our class we had six groups. My friend Aarna and her group went first, their groups one had gone low at first and then on their second chance it went further. 

My group went second and our rocket only had two fins left. But then on our second on we had no more fins. For our first test launch we had 350ml of water and 60psi. For our second test launch we put 200ml of water and 40psi.  Our rocket went pretty high on the second launch. Once all the groups had finished then we went back to our school. 

I think that our bottle was really heavy when we were doing our first launch. But our second one went quite high.

The Wonder Project: Session 2 of Aerodynamics!

We had our 5th session but really it was the second session of aerodynamics. Today we were testing our rockets. By testing I mean Colm showed how to make sure our rockets are stable. Once we were back in our classes we went through the steps and then started. For step 1 we found out what the centre of mass is. We did this by getting a long piece of string and we did a loop around the bottle. Then we made a knot, one person would hold the string and the other person would try to put the piece of string in the middle. When you do that then your bottle will have to balance. If it does balance then just make a line which is for the centre of mass or COP. We sellotaped the string on the bottle and then moved on. Once we did step one we moved onto step two: Finding the centre of pressure. We got cardboard and made a stencil of our bottle. We then cut it out and used a ruler to find the centre of pressure. The ruler was straight and then we put the cardboard stencil over it. We tried to balance the stencil on the ruler. Once it was balanced we drew a small line there. We also put a line on the bottle at the exact same place as the one on the stencil. Step 3 was easy because it was only a stability test. You hold the string and try to make the bottle move in a circle. If it does then it is stable. If it doesn't then it is not stable. You will have to make changes if it is not stable.

The Wonder Project - Session 4 (Aerodynamics)

This week for session 4 in our Wonder Project, we were looking at aerodynamics. At first we watched a clip and then we were testing our paper planes. Colm, our ambassador, made different types of paper air planes and we were testing them out. We tested them by seeing how far they go. After that we had 5 minutes to make a plane of our choice. I got help because I don't know how to make a plane. But my plane was good. When we got back to class we talked about a prototype and the safety tips. Then we started to make our prototype rockets. For my group we made three fins, one smiley face on the lid, three circles as tiny windows and some designs. We cut the neck of a mountain dew bottle and put it on the bottom of the bottle. Once we were done we just packed and waited until the rest of the groups were done.

The Wonder Project - Newton's Law (Session 3)

This time (for the Wonder Project) we had our third session. If you didn't know what the Wonder Project is then you should look at my old post. Today we were learning about Newton's laws. The three laws are: The law of motion, The law of directions and one more which I don't remember. When we were at the hall then we were doing an amazing experiment. We had 3 tables with three bottles at each tiny table. Three people would go up and they would stand there until they are told to start. There is a sheet underneath the three bottles. One bottle half way, one empty and one full. You are meant to pull the sheet and only one is meant to fall. The one that falls is the one without water and sometimes the one full of water. My classmate, Haunga did it in one go.  A lot of people were able to do it. After that we were drawing a rocket in our groups. When we came back to our class we were given papers to draw our own rockets but not in groups, independently. Then we got together and chose a design that your group likes. My group liked my designs and my fins.

The Wonder Project

This week, for the Wonder project, we looked at health and safety. We also did some test launches with bottles. The Wonder Project is a project where we bring 1.5 litre bottles.  Then we put fins on them and make them into a rocket. We put different amounts of water in. We put pound per square inch (PSI) with a air pump. We used 50-60 PSI. After that we launch them into the sky. Our scientist Colm was taking the test launches with two students.
